Hoosiers of Many Faiths in Community

Hoosier volunteers tell truths about detained mothers

“COIN’s local practices align closely with those of DPBP in Texas, and this trip and subsequent community report is an opportunity to show that Hoosiers care and how volunteering can make a difference in the lives of our immigrant neighbors” said Julie Sommers Neuman, Executive Director of COIN.

Coalition for Our Immigrant Neighbors (COIN) reported on the group’s recent trip to the immigrant detention center in Dilley, TX. The event took place Tuesday, March 19 at the Indiana Interchurch Center (1100 W 42nd St. Indianapolis, IN 46208).

The group organized 16 Hoosiers attorneys and interpreters to volunteer with the Dilley Pro Bono Project (DPBP) at the South Texas Family Residential Center from February 24 through March 2. Volunteers helped detained mothers prepare for their credible fear interviews, a crucial part of the United States asylum process. More information about the Dilley Pro Bono Project can be found here.

COIN is a coalition of service providers working together to facilitate and coordinate community efforts to provide legal, psychological and other services for immigrants in Central Indiana. Similar to COIN, the DPBP operates a non-traditional pro bono model of legal services. DPBP recruits and organizes groups of volunteer attorneys and interpreters to travel to Dilley every week to assist the pro bono legal team at the detention center.

“COIN’s local practices align closely with those of DPBP in Texas, and this trip and subsequent community report is an opportunity to show that Hoosiers care and how volunteering can make a difference in the lives of our immigrant neighbors” said Julie Sommers Neuman, Executive Director of COIN.”

Of his experience with the Dilley Pro Bono Project, volunteer attorney David Jose said: “I am proud and pleased that we [could] show essential hospitality to the women and their children who have faced such difficult and traumatic circumstances… Uniformly, each woman is a mother who is totally motivated to support their child or children and provide an opportunity for education and a better, safer life… [They] are an incredible source for inspiration and growth and possibility for our country and our communities.
