Let’s wish our Hindu sisters & brothers: Happy Ram Navami!

From CIC board member Anita Joshi:

April 13th is the celebration of Ram Navami for Hindus. Ram Navami is the celebration of the birth of Shri Rama who is seen as the 7th avatar of Vishnu. He came to this earth to show us all how a great leader should follow in the path of dharma. He is the central character in one of the great Hindu epic stories The Ramayana. The Ramayana was composed by Sage Valmiki and is written in 7 chapters of 24,000 rhyming couplets. It tells the story of the life of Rama and is revered throughout India to this day.

“The festival is celebrated with music and food and by the donations of food and clothing to those in need.”

By the way: Have you ever wanted to read the Ramayana for yourself? It’s an epic poem that has shaped Hidu culture similarly to the way that Homer’s Iliad shaped ancient Greek culture. The public library has many copies, and many translations. Check it out, and please tell us what you think of it.
