Celebrate the Dormition of the Theotokos at St. George Orthodox Christian Church

The Assumption of Mary into Heaven (often shortened to the Assumption) celebrates the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. Orthodox Christians use a way cooler name, and invite us to celebrate with them.

The Latin Catholic Feast of the Assumption is celebrated on 15 August, and the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholics celebrate the Dormition of the Mother of God (or Dormition of the Theotokos, the falling asleep of the Mother of God) on the same date, preceded by a 14-day fast period.

Says St. George Orthodox Christian Church:

FEAST OF THE DORMITION TO BE OBSERVED WEDNESDAY EVENING: 6:30 PM, AUGUST 14
The Fast leading up to the Feast of the Dormition (repose) of the Mother of God runs from August 1-14.
• We celebrate the Feast with Liturgy Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 6:30 pm.
• As we typically do on the second Wednesday of each month, the Teen SOYO will lead the service responses, Camp-style.
