Hoosiers of Many Faiths in Community

IMG_20151023_153321(1)My name is Sena Ojo. As an Americorp member, the best reward received has been from serving marginalized individuals and groups who express need. Fulfilling a need is what inspires me to serve. By serving mankind I feel that I am serving myself. Everyone at some point in life has an expressed need or concern.
My personal belief is that it is more of a blessing to serve than to be served. Thus, for the 2015-2016 annual year I will service the community of Nueva Creacion under the supervision of Hector Hernandez at the John Knox Presbyterian church. It is a privilege to work with our IRSC (CIC) director Benjamin Leslie and my site supervisor Hector Hernandez this year.

I recently obtained my undergraduate degree at Indiana State University in Criminal Justice and I have a Masters Degree in Psychology. I received various scholarships and awards for academic honors, volunteer service, and mentoring. In undergraduate school my first year I was on the Alpha Lambda Delta honors society. The following two years I conducted Masters level research as a McNair Scholar which is a preparatory scholastic program to equip individuals for Master and PhD level assignments. Additionally, I was a part of an organization called M.A.P.S. (Mentoring Assistant for Prospective Scholars), a work study program, as I worked to fulfill requirements with Americorp and the (Aftercare for Indiana through Mentoring) A.I.M. “Indianapolis” program at Indiana State University under the guidance of Roger Jajora and site supervisor Heath Hurst.

While working to complete my Master Degree I began volunteering for the Licensed Professional Counseling, Student Affiliate Organization (LPCA-SAO) and quickly moved to serving on the board being voted in as Vice-President and later becoming Interim President of our student chapter. Our student Lpca-Sao organization worked with the state board over Georgia to learn and comply with ALL ethical codes for licensed clinical counselors. Furthermore, the experienced mentioned will contribute to the service rendered to our local community through Nueva Creacion. While at Nueva Creacion, I hope to create awareness of the new site, aiding with organization and development of the location, coordinate events (for community outreach), and promote business and residential collaboration. The entire initiative is to foster good Health, Safety, Faith, Fun, and Education for multicultural development. I look forward to an awesome year with Americorp, I am ready to SERVE!
