Breaking Bread for Humanity: An Interfaith Iftar @ JCC Indianapolis Laikin Auditorium | Indianapolis | Indiana | United States

JCRC, OBAT Helpers, MAI, IHC and Beth-El Zedeck invite you to break bread with them on May 25th 2019. The interfaith Iftar is being held to raise awareness and funds for Rohingya refugees who after having fled persecution, violence and genocide in Myanmar, are now settled in the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh. OBAT Helpers, an Indianapolis based nonprofit, addressed this humanitarian crisis by providing initial relief to the refugees through distribution of meals and essential items of daily living, followed with expansive efforts to rebuild their lives through provision of shelters, education, empowerment opportunities and health care.

Iftar or breaking of the Ramadan fast will take place at 9:01 pm. This evening meal will be preceded by an hour long program in which you will hear from representatives of the sponsoring organizations and learn about the impact of the Rohingya crisis.

We hope that you will join us on this inspirational evening to stand with Rohingya refugees.

2019 Congregation Interest Meeting @ Meridian Street United Methodist Church
Jun 20 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
2019 Congregation Interest Meeting @ Meridian Street United Methodist Church | Indianapolis | Indiana | United States

In 2016, Indianapolis had the second highest number of evictions of all cities in the United States, second only to New York City. Indy had more evictions than Chicago, St. Louis, and Boston combined. (Source: Eviction Lab, Princeton University) Thirty-one households on average are evicted each day, a primary factor leading to homelessness.

We invite any clergy or concerned members of a congregation to learn more about how your congregation can join a network of 44 other congregations to give shelter, food, and hospitality to families facing homelessness.

Currently 10 families per day call Family Promise seeking shelter. These families are staying in their cars, weekly stay hotels, are doubled up with other family in apartments/houses, or in the worst case are on the street already.

Family Promise runs a program called the Interfaith Hospitality Network where congregations use their existing facilities and volunteers to respond to the crisis of family homelessness. There is a need to recruit two more congregations to host families in 2019.

The event will begin with an optional meal at 5:00pm. An interactive presentation will follow at 5:30pm, with a chance to ask questions. At 6:30pm you will have the chance to take the elevator upstairs to see a sample set up of a sleeping room that this congregation uses when they host families facing homelessness.

All are welcome to attend, whether clergy, a congregation member, or just a person with interest in helping. No commitment is necessary to attend, just interest! The congregation hosting the meeting–Meridian Street United Methodist Church–joined the Interfaith Hospitality Network and started hosting families for the first time in 1994 as one of our founding congregations.

The building is accessible, but please send any special audio/visual presentation or dietary needs in advance to mike@fpgi.org so we can accomodate them.

Parking is free in the church parking lot, and please enter the glass double doors on the north side of the building where you will be greeted and directed to the dining room.

There is no cost to attend this meeting.

It is amazing what the interfaith community can do together. Thank you for considering joining us!

With hope and gratitude,

The Congregational Relationships Committee

About the Interfaith Hospitality Network

The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) is the hallmark program of Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis, started in 1994 in Indianapolis and Hamilton County. Today, more than 46 congregations take turns hosting four families each for a week or two at a time, a total of three to four weeks per year. Their members set up rollaway beds (provided) on Sunday, cook dinners the seven evenings, plan children’s activities at night, transport families in the Family Promise van to and from the Day Center daily, and then tear down the rooms the following Sunday and drop the van and trailer (with beds inside) off at the next congregation. Together, more than 60 families are given shelter, food, and hospitality each year through the program, while a professional case manager at the Family Promise Day Center helps them transition into permanent housing in about a month or two. See a video about its impact and learn more here. Also, see a story about the program on Indy’s WTHR (Channel 13) here.
